NVK: An Open-Source Vulkan Driver for NVIDIA GPUs
This almost feels like an April Fools’ Day joke that was six months late.
Nouveau – that terrible open-source graphics driver for NVIDIA? That will soon get replaced with the new open-source NVK driver. This was written by Jason Ekstrand from Collabora, as well as Koral Herbst and Dave Airlie at Red Hat.
Getting the driver to work, according to the blog post, was through the Turing class of GPUs, which contained a new unified firmware blob; NVIDIA’s open-source kernel driver; and obtaining the official headers for the 3D and compute hardware.
Steam Deck Client Beta Makes Custom Boot Animations Even Easier, Automatically Scales Resolution when Connected to External Display
Remember that tutorial on how to replace the Deck’s bootloader animation? Well, all these guides that have been popping up caught Valve’s attention. Today’s new beta Deck client update makes this process even easier. Custom videos will now go in /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamui/overrides/movies/ (note that this directory will need to be made first). These videos will now be in a safer place, and they won’t get wiped with every update. Not only this, but these videos will be played in fullscreen automatically; no need to modify the library.

Europe is entrenched in World War II. Countless lives have been lost. Asya, a ten-year-old girl, is destined to become a faceless labor camp worker along with the millions of other Ostarbeiters. But this poor young girl can’t fight, and she doesn’t want to either. She just wants to go home.

GE-Proton7-36 Adds Protonfix for Halo Reach Mod Tools, Temporarily Disables FSR
GE-Proton7-36 has imported the NVAPI enablements and media-converter changes from upstream Proton. In addition to updating DXVK, VKD3D-Proton, and Wine-Bleeding Edge, Protonfixes have been added to the following:
Shatterline Halo Reach mod tools Ougon Musoukyoku But one feature in this update has been removed, at least for now: FSR. The reasoning, according to the patch notes, is as follows:
The commit is important because it fixes some problems that were happening with winevulkan, but unfortunately it also patches in a lot of components that were already part of the FSR patch.
Kernel 6.0 Is Now Here, Adds Raptor Lake Thunderbolt Support and Initial Support for Meteor Lake
After a couple of dozen or so of releases, the Linux kernel version moves up to the next number. In this case kernel 5.19 has now moved on to kernel 6.0. This release doesn’t seem too exciting for us gamers, although there is the usual support for new hardware, such as Intel Meteor Lake processors and AMD’s RDNA3 graphics. Those of you who use hardware from Tuxedo Computers may also benefit here, as keyboard/touchpad fixes have been added when the device is suspended.

You Can Now Run Tuxedo OS On Your PC
Whelp, I never thought this would see the light of day. But it did.
As It’s FOSS brought out earlier today, Tuxedo Computers has finally made their tailor-made distro, Tuxedo OS, available outside of their own hardware. You can download their ISO and install it on any computer now. No need to use their WebFAI flash drive. Meaning that you can hopefully install it with a graphical interface, while being able to configure your partitions, and not have to use an Ethernet connection.
Genshin Impact: Coming to Steam Deck?
Reddit user Bar_Har spotted a Deck running Genshin Impact during the Tokyo Game Show. Apparently the game isn’t available on Steam, and playing it on Linux requires disabling the anti-cheat software that it uses. And even then, your account is at risk of getting banned.
So who knows. Maybe that particular Deck was running Windows. Or, for all we know, that could just be a picture blown up in fullscreen. Or maybe Valve really is working with the developers of the game to get it to run nicely on the handheld.
