Proton Experimental Update Adds Several Fixes to Launchers and Adds Network Video Support for a Few Titles
The same day the first batch of Q3 emails for the Steam Deck go out also happens to be the day we get an update to Proton Experimental, just a little over a week after the previous one. This update mostly focuses on bug fixes, ranging from the following:
the launcher for Final Fantasy XIV should no longer close if there isn’t enough space to download an update Elite Dangerous and other launchers should no longer exert strange behavior when using cloned displays Call of Duty: Black Ops II Zombies and Multiplayer should remain playable after connecting online Azur Lane: Crosswave should no longer hang on a black screen Chrono Trigger should no longer suffer from random crashing during cutscenes In addition to these bug fixes, we also have improved video playback for Persona 4 Golden.
Splittown – An Upcoming Point N’ Click Adventure Could Be Coming to Linux
Someone had emailed me this morning regarding an upcoming point-and-click adventure called Splittown. According to the official site, you play as the character Leonard Nimby. Nimby is a former “top agent of IM5” who’s on the move to find the person responsible for stealing his shrink gun…right on the day before an election.
Seems like a pretty interesting premise. It also has that nice 90s aesthetic to it, reminiscent of the SNES/Genesis days.
Portal 2 Beta Maps Discovered From Datamining
Just a few days ago, Valve released the Portal series to the Nintendo Switch, known as Portal: Companion Collection. It didn’t take long for dataminers to discover new, unreleased beta content that never showed up in the final product as a result of this port. From Ossy Flawol’s YouTube video, it appears there are at least nine beta maps from Portal 2. The video then goes on to show these maps as Chell explores them.
GE-Proton7-24 Released, Adds Ultrawide Support with FSR
GloriousEggroll seems to be on a…glorious streak with plenty of updates coming to GE-Proton in just a matter of days. Since GE-Proton7-22 (or 7-21?) we’ve been able to get Halo Infinite multiplayer to run out-of-the-box on NVIDIA, and it will work on AMD with GE’s Mesa patch. GE-Proton7-23 came a day later to make games easier to work with FSR. And yesterday we got yet another update that fixes the Death Stranding crash and adds FSR support on ultrawide monitors.
Infinitime 1.10.0 Released, Adds Faster Sleep Time and Timer UI Improvements
It’s been a few months since the last 1.9.0 update for the InfiniTime firmware for the PineTime. Version 1.10.0 mostly has under the hood changes, which are “very important for the maintenance of the project,” but there are still some goodies here for you and I to enjoy. Here’s some of the new features:
Timer app has a re-designed UI to make the buttons easier to press. You can also hold the buttons down to quickly change the value notifications can now be dismissed by right-swiping the screen you can now record GIFs with InfiniSim sleep time is now faster improved colors on the LCD There’s also been a few bug fixes, including the track progress now correctly being displayed in the Music app and the alarm should now always ring.
Steam Deck Client Gets an Update, Addresses Several Bugs
Just when you thought that there hadn’t been any updates in a while for the Deck, today we get “a very nice set of bug fixes.” Such as when scrolling through a EULA causing navigation issues, deleting a screenshot causing crashes, and the controller configurator not loading when Steam Cloud is disabled. Those things should no longer be a problem. Patch notes are as follows:
Fixed an issue where clicking in-game links when offline would get Steam Deck into a bad state Fixed navigation issues in the game EULA dialog Fixed crashing issue when deleting a screenshot Fixed the controller configurator failing to load when Steam Cloud is disabled Fixed configurator failing to load when encountering corrupted controller layout files Fixed controller virtual menus being limited to 4 active menus Fixed a bug causing the touchscreen to occasionally be stuck in mouse-emulation mode when accessing the configurator in-game You can also see the patch notes on Steam.
Halo Infinite Making Strides with GE-Proton
Looks like we’re finally able to run Halo Infinite on Linux by means of GE-Proton7-22. Take it with a grain of salt though as this is in the early stages. The game refuses to run on my desktop with an NVIDIA GPU but it looks like it’s running pretty well on my Deck, albeit with some missing textures.
Someone on the GitHub issue tracker mentioned using a custom-patched Mesa library in order to get the weapons and players to properly render…and it looks like the Nobara Project already has this patched version of Mesa.
Steam Deck Production to Ramp Up During Q3 (And Presumably Beyond)
Good news for those of you still waiting on your Deck pre-order: now that the wave of Q2 emails have been sent out, Valve will reportedly be increasing the rate at which the device will be produced at the factory. @OnDeck reported on Twitter that “production has picked up, and after today we’ll be shipping more than double the number of Steam Decks every week!”
They’ll even be sending Q3 emails a day early, on June 30th.
AOKZOE: A New PC Gaming Handheld Enters the Market
Since the announcement of the Steam Deck, portable PC gaming consoles have been proliferating the market. We have another one coming next month: the AOKZOE (pronounced “a-okay-zoey”). AOK is translated into English as “perfect,” while ZOE is translated as “sports life.” Devices start shipping in September.
From the photos I was sent it looks like this handheld will have a kickstand. The color of the face buttons kind of reminds me of the SNES controller.
