WinesapOS – The Ultimate Portable Linux Gaming Distro

WinesapOS has come a long way. Going from being able to play Halo with a friend on Mac, it has now evolved to become much more. It’s now become this thing where you can install the distro on a flash drive or MicroSD card for the Steam Deck, and enjoy an awesome gaming experience, with all the software packages you could possibly need provided right out of the gate. No need to install it to your internal drive.

WinesapOS 3.2.0 RC Adds Prism Launcher, Improves Xbox Controller Support

WinesapOS – the portable Linux distro that lets you use Linux on any flash drive without having to install it – has evolved from alpha to beta to what is now the release candidate. Here’s some noteworthy changes:

The latter is recommended for 3D acceleration improved Mac support, with better fan control and Wi-Fi support PolyMC has now been replaced with Prism Launcher for your Minecraft needs improved Xbox and Xbox 360 controller support the NVIDIA Flatpak runtime is now updated whenever the distro is upgraded – this prevents upgrade issues As with the beta release there are some known issues with workarounds:
ChimeraOS 36 Adds Support for Wii Emulation, Additional Artwork For Emulated Games on Steam Deck UI

New release of ChimeraOS is out. It’s rather small, but does add a few new features, including the ability to add Wii ROMs via the Chimera app, as well as being able to “select additional artwork on emulated games” for the Steam Deck UI.
Some fixes have also been added:
Fixed missing Text Editor shortcut in desktop mode Fixed artwork selection for emulated games Fixed additional artwork for Steam games not downloading or applying under certain conditions Fixed external monitor not working on Gamepad/Deck UI Finally, non-Steam shortcuts marked as “hidden” will no longer appear in the Deck UI.
WinesapOS 3.2.0 (Beta) Adds Support for VMware Virtualization, Provides More Stable Mesa Drivers

WinesapOS – the brilliant Arch-based gaming distro created by Luke Short – has evolved from 3.2.0 alpha to beta. Noteworthy updates in this release include:
support for VMware Fusion/Workstation bauh replaces Pamac – this is evidently more stable now built against “the latest Arch Linux” rather than targeting the outdated SteamOS 3’s packages – provides a more stable graphics library progress bar is now shown on initial setup rather than using terminal minimum requirements to run the distro have been lowered – you can run it on a single CPU core and 2 GB RAM!
You Can Now Run Tuxedo OS On Your PC

Whelp, I never thought this would see the light of day. But it did.
As It’s FOSS brought out earlier today, Tuxedo Computers has finally made their tailor-made distro, Tuxedo OS, available outside of their own hardware. You can download their ISO and install it on any computer now. No need to use their WebFAI flash drive. Meaning that you can hopefully install it with a graphical interface, while being able to configure your partitions, and not have to use an Ethernet connection.
ChimeraOS 35 Adds GNOME Desktop, Fixes for Aya Neo Air/OneXPlayer Mini, and System Update Notifications on the Steam Deck UI

ChimeraOS 35 marks a pretty big release for the SteamOS-like distro. The biggest feature is probably the addition of a desktop environment. Previously, you were stuck in Big Picture Mode, the Steam Deck UI, or the CLI. Now, similar to SteamOS, you can use your living room console or Deck for work or other production purposes, thanks to the addition of a desktop. Unlike SteamOS 3, however, ChimeraOS makes use of GNOME.
ChimeraOS 34 Released, Improves Handheld Gamepad Support and Adds Plenty of Bug Fixes
ChimeraOS – one of my favorite gaming-oriented distributions – just got a big update today. Proton has been re-enabled for Windows-based games (for some reason it wasn’t before), several bug fixes have been addressed for the Steam Deck UI, Proton, and Bluetooth, a UI has been added for formatting external hard drives, “ChimeraOS Verified and Playable” games have been added to the Deck UI, and plenty of other improvements! In addition, the typical set of software packages have been updated:
WinesapOS Now Works on Steam Deck with MicroSD Card

When I had reported to Luke Short – the main developer behind WinesapOS – that his distro wouldn’t boot on a MicroSD card on the Steam Deck, he personally saw to it that he would replicate the issue and fix it. As such, we now have a new update to enjoy: 3.1.1.
I can now confirm WinesapOS runs on the Steam Deck when it’s installed on a MicroSD card. Display is rotated (though I’ve found this to be a very common issue with distros outside of SteamOS).
