Wine 8.0 Released, Brings Improved Performance to Direct3D and Improved Controller Hotplugging Support

Wine 8.0 has now been declared as stable. In it were five release candidates which “represents a year of development effort” and over 8,600 changes. The main achievement of this release, as brought out in the patch notes, “is the completion of the conversion to PE format.” The PE conversion itself took four years worth of work! But it’s important to have as this, as this is a “milestone on the road to supporting various features” such as copy protection and x86 application support on ARM.
Wine 8.0-rc5 Fixes Slow OpenGL Performance with Dark Souls Remastered, Fixes Video Playback for Several Titles

The patch notes mention for this particular release candidate that it should be “the last…before the final 8.0.” Not as big of an update as previous release candidates, but bug fixes we did get for a few titles, including Dark Souls Remastered, Mafia III, War Mongrels, The Medium, and Sherlock Holmes Chapter One.
A total of nine bugs were fixed:
