Halo Infinite Now Runs on Deck!
UPDATE (7/22): I’ve put out a guide for those of you who can’t get the game to run, plus what I’ve found to be the best settings for a smooth 60 FPS.
Earlier today GloriousEggroll released GE-Proton7-26. Though this update is rather minor compared to 7-25, it nevertheless fixes a regression in vkd3d-proton that prevented Halo Infinite from going past the initial screen.
Low and behold, the game not only runs, but the textures have been fixed!
New Beta Deck Client Update, Stable Update for SteamOS, and Keep your Deck from Overheating
New beta Deck client shipped out just a few hours ago. This adds the Sucheng keyboard for Tradional Chinese, adds an Achievements page to the Steam overlay, prevents the annoying “You have unclaimed digital rewards!” notification from appearing every time you turn the Deck on, fixes Night Mode from automatically turning on when it’s set to OFF, and brings improvements to the OSK when in desktop mode (should now properly show up or disappear when the appropriate button is pressed).
An Interview with Noah (AKA BBQKITTY) – Founder of Steam Deck HQ
While Steam Deck HQ is only a month old, it has quickly become my favorite go-to site for checking all things Steam Deck-related. Though it originally covered game reviews and what the best settings are for each, the site has evolved into much more than that. It’s also a place where you can get news and guides. And the content will expand even further with YouTube videos.
So I wanted to interview the website owner, Noah, and get his thoughts on the Steam Deck, why he created Steam Deck HQ, and what we can look forward to as far as future content.
MultiVersus Has Full Proton/Steam Deck Support!
While it’s debatable whether MultiVersus will be a Smash killer, I’m happy to report the game now runs flawlessly on the Steam Deck. Previously, running the game was technically possible, but you would get kicked almost immediately if you joined an online match, due to EAC. Evidently, Warner Bros. listened to community feedback; after testing today’s open beta, I can confirm the kicking is no longer a thing. The game also has 16:10 support.
Clearing Up Some Confusion Regarding LGC
So I’ve noticed between my Steam Deck review and my earlier post about Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3 that there have been some complaints that they’re either inaccurate or have nothing to do with Linux. Let’s start with the Steam Deck review.
Admittedly there were some statements that I made that weren’t true. For example, Valve actually hired the team behind Narbacular Drop. So the idea of the Portal series wasn’t “borrowed,” per se; the game served more as an inspiration rather than anything else, with the developers of Narbacular Drop helping the Portal series come to fruition.
Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3 Boxart Leaked
According to a post by Nintendo Life, it appears that Best Buy had leaked the sequel to Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix a few weeks ago, Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway. Based on the information we have so far, it looks like it will be releasing later this fall on October 7, just a day less than a year after the release of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, and will be coming with a similar $50 price tag.
GE-Proton7-25 Released, Updates Wine to Bleeding-Edge and Adds FSR Auto-Calculation
Today’s update to GE-Proton adds some fixes to Final Fantasy XIV (seems like that game always needs some kind of patching). Specifically the intro video after the datacenter select should be fixed (apparently this isn’t the first time this has happened). The patch notes mention that this may also fix WMV playback in a few other titles. Trove and Rift have been fixed as well.
Wine has been updated to bleeding-edge, which “brings in numerous fixes,” DXVK has been updated to 1.
News for July 9-15 (4K Verified/Playable Deck Titles, Launch Lite Keyboard, Nobara Project Interview, Aya Neo OS)
Steam Deck I did a review. Needless to say, it was controversial, as expected (though I do take back some of my opinions which aren’t fact) new beta client update fixes a few Flatpaks from not successfully quitting and improves keyboard behavior when typing on both the trackpad and touchscreen 43 of the top 50 highest-reviewed games on Steam are Steam Deck Playable over 4k verified/playable titles Native Linux Games want to force a native Linux game engine on certain titles?
Proton Experimental Fixes Regression with Final Fantasy XIV (Also Automatically Brings Up OSK on Deck for the Launcher)
If Gabe is into something, he really means it. So when he says he’s a Final Fantasy XIV fan, he’s going to get down to business. Because now the regression with said game when using different Proton prefixes should no longer be an issue. And that’s the only game that was shown any favor with this update. Talk about dedication.
Gabe further showed his love for the RPG by adding a little extra special sauce for you Steam Deck fans out there.
WinesapOS Now Works on Steam Deck with MicroSD Card
When I had reported to Luke Short – the main developer behind WinesapOS – that his distro wouldn’t boot on a MicroSD card on the Steam Deck, he personally saw to it that he would replicate the issue and fix it. As such, we now have a new update to enjoy: 3.1.1.
I can now confirm WinesapOS runs on the Steam Deck when it’s installed on a MicroSD card. Display is rotated (though I’ve found this to be a very common issue with distros outside of SteamOS).
